Most boating accidents are preventable. A quick pre-launch check takes less than 5 minutes and can prevent a bad day on the water. Run through this checklist before you back down the ramp.
Before You Leave Home
- Check the weather — RampFinder shows live wind speed, barometric pressure, and visibility at every ramp. If wind exceeds 15-20 mph on an open lake, reconsider.
- File a float plan — Tell someone where you're going, what lake or body of water, and when you expect to return.
- Check fuel — Fill up before you get to the ramp. Running out of fuel on the water is avoidable and embarrassing.
At the Ramp: Pre-Launch Checklist
- ✅ Drain plug installed — The #1 cause of preventable sinkings. Check it before you back down. Check it again.
- ✅ Life jackets accessible — One Coast Guard-approved PFD for every person on board. Children must wear them. Know where they are.
- ✅ Fire extinguisher present and charged — Required on motorized vessels. Check the gauge.
- ✅ Navigation lights working — If there's any chance you'll be on the water after dark.
- ✅ Kill switch lanyard attached — Attach it to your wrist or life jacket before you leave the dock.
- ✅ Engine tilted to correct depth — Don't submerge the engine in shallows or launch in water too shallow for your motor.
- ✅ Bilge pump operational — Turn it on briefly to confirm it works.
- ✅ Communication device — VHF radio or charged cell phone. Know how to call for help (VHF Channel 16 is the distress channel).
